May 7th, 2007 report
Today Linc and I managed to make some time to get out after a derby fish or two. We set up at 5:45 am just East of the chute in 10 FOW and before I could set all the lines, we had a big fish on. I handed to line to Linc and he fought it for a few minutes. We both felt that it was probably a 10lb + brown trout, but unfortunately we never got to see it as the hook pulled out. Shucks! We were both looking forward to seeing that fish and possibly taking it to the derby scales. Linc and I banged the beach for a couple of hours after that and managed to hook up quite a few times in the ever-clearing water. Our biggest fish of the day was a healthy 6 lb brown, and we boated several other smaller browns. All of the fish were released. Hot spoons today were all Dreamweavers. Their 42nd spoon and Glow Frog all took multiple rips. The top producing stick bait (actually, the only stickbait to fire) was once again a Dave's KA-BOOM Shiner in Firetiger. We were trolling in 10-18 FOW for most of the morning, and found water temps in the 47-49 degree range. Best speed for us was 2.25-2.50 mph.
Once the morning bite began to slow down, we took a troll out as far as 200 FOW looking for Kings. We didn't find any that wanted to cooperate, but we did find a few nice hooks on the sonar that made me think that there are a few out there. My guess is that it won't belong before we're targeting Kings. If I was going out tomorrow morning, I'd probably opt to skip the inshore fishing and head straight out to 120FOW and give it a whirl with the silvers.
Today was my first time fishing with Linc, and we hit it off really well. I enjoyed having him on board and I look forward to fishing with him again...he's my kind of guy...bowhunter, wing shooter, and fisherman! Thanks for an enjoyable day Linc. I look forward to our next trip out on the Big "O".
