Fishing Report June 24, 2007

I had a GREAT day of fishing on Sunday, June 24th.  In the morning, my friend Keith and I volunteered our time to take some kids fishing in the 2nd annual kids fishing day hosted by the Fair Haven Area Chamber of Commerce and Chris Drogi at Anchor Resort.  I participated in this event last year and had such a rewarding day that I just had to do it again this year.  In addition to Keith and I,  Capt. Werner Stenger, Capt. Jim Jared, and Capt. Bob Geis volunteered their time, equipment, crew, knowledge, and passion for the sport of fishing to these deserving kids.  This year we were joined by four great boys and their case worker and a reporter from the local newspaper.  We met the kids at the dock at 9am and then headed out in search of some fun, and I'd say we succeeded in spades.  Each of the boys caught and released several perch, bluegills, and bass.  The kids smiles were a mile wide as each fish was brought into the boat!  We spent most of our time fishing in the bay, but we also ventured out onto the main lake and spent a few minutes trolling for brown trout too.  We were back at the dock at noon for a BBQ to wrap up the day.  At the BBQ it was fun to listen to the kids from the different boats telling their buddies about their day of fishing.....these kids are definitely fishermen, as there were some mighty tall tales being told about the "big ones" that got away!  Each participant got to keep the rod & reel they used for the morning, and many thanks go out to Screwy Louies for donating the rods & reels to this worthwhile event.

Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the camera with me, so I don't have any pictures to share with you at this point.  Both the case worker and the reporter took several photos and promised to email them to me, so as soon as I get them, I'll update this entry and share them with you.  We had a great time with the kids and are definitely looking forward to fishing with them again next year!

NEW - As promised, here are some of the pictures from Kid's Day last weekend:

After our morning with the kids, we headed back to Shawn's Marina to pick up the rest of our crew and we headed out for a short trip in search of some of the kings we'd heard about on the radio while we were out with the kids.  We ran out to 140FOW and got a quick 4 rod program set up.  Not five minutes after we got set up, Keith was hooked up on a major.  It was SO COOL to finally hear that Daiwa reel screeeeaaammmiiinnnggg with a big king on it!  We've loved every minute of the fantastic brown trout fishing this year, but there's just something about fighting a fish that's trying to pull you out of the boat that gets your heart pumping.  Keith played that fish for a good 10 minutes before it threw the hook.  From then on out, it was a slug-fest as we played with a bunch more Kings.  Unfortunately, we only got to fish for about 90 minutes as we had to get back in so that Keith & Sherri could hit the road, so we missed most of what was sure to be an amazing afternoon/evening of fishing.   Funny part of it was, we were the only boat within a mile of our location.  I did get a call from a friend who was in close working browns while we were out deeper, and he came out just after we left and he told me last night that they slammed 'em there too.  Because we were on a tight timetable, we only ran a rigger program.  I'm so glad we have those new super-fast Cannon Mag 10 HS riggers, because when we're fishing as deep as we were, we can really get a rig back down in the water quickly.  We were running 20 ft. leads behind our Sharks and took fish on the Northern King Die Hard, Dreamweaver 42nd, and the R&R Watermelon/grape dots spoons.  Hot flasher/fly combos were were the Siggs Rigs Green Hypnotist and Green Dolphin behind a Green Spin Dr.  We found marks down anywhere from 100-150' out over 140-210 FOW.  Best down speeds according to our Depth Raider were 2.1-2.5 mph.  Of course, no camera out on the lake again, but we did snap a photo back at the dock of Keith and I with his first ever King:

It looks like Salmon season is finally upon us here in Fair Haven!  Give me a call at (607)257-1804 - home, or (607)592-9012 - boat, or drop me an email at capt.bill@billyvsportfishing.com to book a date for your very own Lake Ontario adventure.
