July 14-15, 2007 Wayne County Pro-Am

Team Billy V/Siggs Rigs participated in the Wayne County Pro-Am this past weekend.  Competing against the best tournament teams on Lake Ontario, we finished a respectable 15th place out of 37 teams.  Our team consisted of Jim Ruth, Jay Harmon, Rich Peaslee, Eric Stankiewicz, and me.  Brendon Evans assumed the responsibilities of observing for us.

On Day 1 we started things off with a bang as we were hooked up with our first fish of the day within 30 seconds of the official start of the tournament.  We had a consistent bite all day long, and we ended our day with a nice box of 9 big Kings.  We were running a predominantly flasher/fly program, although we did have a few bites on our spoons as well.  Our best fly colors were the Siggs Rigs Green Hypnotist, Blue Dolphin, Green Dolphin, and White Crinkle pulled behind an 8" Spin Dr. in either White or Green Double Crush Glow.  Our best spoon of the day was easily the DW glow frog.  When the weigh-in was over, we were content to be sitting just outside of the top 5.

Here's the crew with our Day 1 catch.

Day 2 dawned with some rain and wind, but even still, we headed out onto the lake with a lot of excitement and anticipation.  We felt that if we could duplicate or even improve on our catch from the day before that we stood a good chance of moving up the leaderboard.  Since we were over fish all day the day before, we decided to go back to that spot again on Day 2.  We hooked up with our first fish pretty soon after we got set up, but that fish spit the hook.  When we finally boated our fist King of the day, we had already let four or five solid bites slip through our fingers.  For the next hour or so, that was the story...big hits with the fish on for just a moment or two and then nothing.  It was very frustrating to say the least.  After we boated that first fish we went into search mode a bit as we lost the marks we had been working.  We got back over some active fish for a bit and managed to boat three nice kings within 15 minutes of one another, and then the problems began.  We had a Shark weight break off and cost us a bunch of time while we re-rigged that downrigger, then we we broke the plug on our Depth Raider speed & temperature probe.  Ugh!!  Luckily we had our very own MacGyver on board, and amazingly Eric was able to get the probe working again using a chewing gum wrapper of all things.  Go figure.  Throw a few more mis-haps into the mix, and we lost a ton of valuable time that we really needed to help us make up for our bad case of the drops earlier in the day.  We came to the scales on Day 2 pretty discouraged that we only had 4 Kings in our box.  I guess that's why it's called fishing and not catching.  We knew that we had let our opportunities slip away earlier in the day.  Even with the challenges on Day 2, we all had a bunch of fun together and thoroughly enjoyed the event.  All in all, I'd say the weekend was a successful one for us.  Some of the best times of the weekend were spent just hanging out on the boat at the dock with friends, sharing meals with our teammates, pre-fishing the event, rigging the rods, gearing up each day and so on.  We had a great crew that worked well together, and I hope that we can all fish together in more tournaments in the future.  Many thanks to Dad, Jay, Eric, Rich, and Brendon for their hard work and dedication this weekend.  You guys made the whole trip a lot of fun for me.

Here's Jay hard at work on a King.

I would be remiss if I didn't thank Matt Siggeman from Siggs Rigs for his involvement with our team this year.  His flys were instrumental in our gameplan.  Matt's a great guy, and  his flys are the best out there.  You really ought to check them out.  You can find them online at www.siggsrigs.com.

I also need to thank Daiwa, Dreamweaver, Depth Raider, Shark, Traxstech, Cannon, Northern King, R&R, and Dave's KA-BOOM.  We run these products because in my opinion they're the best out there, and all played a big role this weekend.

As you can see from the above pictures, the salmon are here and are eager to play with us.  Give me a call at (607)257-1804 home, (607)592-9012 boat or email me at capt.bill@billyvsportfishing.com to schedule your own Lake Ontario charter.

Till next time....tight lines!

Yo Billy! Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun.  Wish I could have joined you guys.  If you ever need another person or observer give me a shout.  I will fish with you guys any day.  Great pictures.  Hope to see you in August.  As always you're doing a great job out there.
