Fishing Report - July 22, 2007
Today my sister Katrina and her husband Chris joined Dad & I for a family fun day of sensational salmon fishing on beautiful Lake Ontario. Kate & Chris are from Lexington, KY, and Chris had never done this type of fishing before. Dad & I did manage to drag Chris out for a really cold, wet day of steelhead fishing one winter day a few years ago, but that's a story for another day. Today was all about big, open-water Kings.
We headed out at 5:30am and set up out in 150 FOW. We barely had all the rods set when the 135ft. rigger fires and Chris is hooked up with his first-ever King. Just seconds after Chris is hooked up, Dad is into a King of his own that took our Green Spin Dr/Siggs Rigs Green Hypnotist fly set up on a wire diver at 350' on a #2 setting. After a nice battle and some sore forearms, Chris landed this beauty that took our Dalmatian Spin Dr./Siggs Rigs Blue Dolphin set-up:

We found lots of bait and marks out between 140-190 FOW and our Depth Raider showed a nice temperature break down at 125ft. We found our best down speed to be between 2.4 and 2.6mph. We settled into a very steady pick and boated several more Kings, all taken on Spin Dr./Siggs Rigs flys. We had spoons in the water all day long, but didn't have a touch on them, and for the first time in two weeks, we also didn't have a touch on our copper rig. The Dalmatian/Blue Dolphin was easily our hottest set-up, but we also had good luck and lots of action on the White Spin Dr./White Crinkle Siggs Rigs fly, as well as the Green Spin Dr./Green Hypnotist Siggs Rigs fly. Fish came off of our Cannon downriggers (down 120, 125, and 135) and off of our dipsy divers set out 330' and 350' on a #2 setting.
Chris boated the biggest King of the day at just over 22lbs, again taken on the Dalmatian Spinny/Blue Dolphin on the wire:

We were just starting to pull rods to head in when the 135' rigger fired again, and I got to fight a King of my own:

We ended up keeping these three Kings for Chris and Kate to take home for their friends in KY:

I think Chris is now officially hooked on Salmon fishing, and I hope he & Kate can get back to NY again next year for another trip out with us on the Billy V II. We couldn't have asked for better weather, or for better company. Thanks for making today a great day on the water for me guys! I wish we could spend more time like this together...
We'll be super-busy with the charter schedule from here on out, so look for lots of reports in the coming weeks.
Until next time, Fish On!

Captain Bill (or brother Bill in my book) does a great job of running his charter! We had an outstanding time and loved every minute of our trip. We would highly recommend the Billy V experience to both the novice and expert fisherman! We are looking forward to our trip next year!

I've been showing off these pictures to everyone since I got back to Kentucky. We grilled some of the salmon this weekend, and it turned out very tasty. I obviously enjoyed the trip very much, considering I'm coming back to New York in 3 weeks to do it again! Bill, thanks again for everything. See you soon.
