I'm your Captain, Bill Ruth. I've been fishing the waters of Lake Ontario for over 25 years and I hold a 25 ton USCG Master Captain's license. I specialize in trolling for trophy-sized trout and
salmon. We're always trying new things in an effort to catch more fish; charter us for a fishing trip for a day or two and you'll most likely see a lure or technique you've not seen before. We
regularly field test the very latest equipment and tackle for our sponsors and we're more than willing to share the hot set-ups and lures with you. I hope you enjoy our fishing reports and the behind
the scenes look into what goes on with our little operation.
If you've fished the Great Lakes for any length of time, you've no doubt incorporated divers into your program. They're easily one of our top producers for Salmon, and when run in conjunction with wire line and a flasher/fly combo they're simply deadly. Like most of you, we started using the original Luhr-Jensen Dipsy Diver and we really thought that we had them dialed in. There were a few things we didn't like about them, but they were the only option out there so we learned to deal with them. But one day a couple of years ago we needed another diver in a pinch and the only thing we could find was a new diver from Walker called a Deeper Diver. We needed another diver right away for a tournament, so I reluctantly bought it and immediately put it in the water. I have to admit that I was worried that it might run differently than our Dipsy's and cause a big tangled mess. I was relieved to find that the Deeper Diver ran the same as the Dipsy, and I've come to realize that Walker has really made a better mousetrap with their Deeper Diver. First off, we really disliked the ring that comes with the Dipsy. We always ran it to achieve maximum depth, but the rings would inevitably break or get lost and that would render that diver useless to us. Walker solved that problem by elimitaing the ring; they just made the diver the size that we needed it to be without the need for a ring. Brilliant! Next, Walker improved on the directional weight on the bottom of the diver. Their Deeper Diver has a positive weight adjustment system that clicks and holds at each position that you want. Now we don't have to worry about our divers changing settings on us while we fight a fish. We just set it and forget it with the Deeper Diver. Finally, Walker improved the release mechanism. Their advanced release system allows us to ahcieve a more consistent release tension than we could ever get with our old divers, and that alone is worth the price of admission! Like I said earlier, we really feel that Walker has made a better mousetrap with their new diver. You can find the Walker Deeper Diver at most tacke shops.
Feel free to stop by the boat sometime and we'll show you the Deeper Diver. They're the only diver that we run and we'll be happy to show you why.
